Join celebrated Minnesota author and architectural historian, Jane King Hession, as she presents meticulous and fascinating research about the work completed by Frank Lloyd Wright in Japan.

Jane King Hession explains that Frank Lloyd Wright first traveled to Japan in 1905 and would return to design the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, completed in 1923.  The architecture, culture, and landscapes of Japan captivated Wright and transformed his work.  His fascination with the art of Japan led to a second career, as a highly successful dealer of Japanese prints.  Wright, in turn, left his architectural mark on the country and influenced future generations of architects who would do the same.  Jane's talk will retrace Wright’s steps to explore the place he once called, “the most romantic artistic country on earth.”

MNSAH Fall Tour – Minneapolis Revival: Peavey Plaza and Loring Greenway. Saturday October 8; 9:30am


MNSAH’s Fall Tour features a walking tour of both Peavey Plaza and the Loring Greenway in downtown Minneapolis, which were designed by New York landscape architect M. Paul Friedberg, who promoted an innovative approach to urban design, the park plaza. Using urban materials, such as concrete and metal, and rectilinear rather than curvilinear forms, the park plaza was a modern counterpoint to the picturesque greenery that had characterized parks until that time.

In the course of the tour we will learn why these urban landscapes are significant and worthy of preservation and about the extensive efforts needed to preserve Peavey Plaza.

The tour will be led by Elizabeth Gales and Charlene Roise, historians/architectural historians with Hess, Roise and Company, Minneapolis-based historical consultants. They prepared the National Register nomination for Peavey Plaza and were involved with the long negotiations that led to its rehabilitation.

IDS Center 50th Anniversary Ceremony. Thursday, September 22, 2022; Noon–2pm


IDS Center and mdc invite the Minneapolis community to partake in the ceremony and enjoy the thoughtfully crafted schedule of events in celebration of the property’s golden anniversary. The event will take place in the Crystal Court, Minneapolis’ central gathering place, from noon – 2:00 p.m. CT, and will feature:
  • Remarks from Mayor Jacob Frey, Council Member Lisa Goodman and IDS Center General Manager Deb Kolar on the building’s significance and the important role it plays in the Minneapolis community and defining the city’s skyline;
  • Performances by Nunnabove, Sounds of Blackness and legendary graffiti artist Alex Smith;
  • Giveaways from some of the building’s popular dining concepts, including noa, which is creating a signature mocktail, and Cardigan Donuts, which is designing a donut cake;
Over the last 50 years, the IDS Center has played host to many high-profile events, including the 2021 NCAA Men’s Final Four, where ESPN’s Dick Vitale and Digger Phelps broadcasted live from the Crystal Court; the 2008 Republican National Convention, where the property served as the official VIP media hub for local and national media networks; and the 1992 and 2018 Super Bowl kickoffs, where national broadcast networks conducted interviews in the lead-up to the game. What’s more, the property has served as a filming site for several blockbuster television shows and movies, such as The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Mighty Ducks, Purple Rain, Young Adult, Joe Somebody and Fooling Around.

Duluth Preservation Alliance: 2022 Annual Historic Properties Tour. Sunday, September 18, 2022.


Duluth​ ​is​ ​a​ ​city​ ​rich​ ​with​ ​architectural​ ​history.​ ​A unique part of that ​history​ ​will​ ​be​ ​on​ ​display​ ​during​ ​the​ ​Duluth​ ​Preservation​ ​Alliance’s​ ​Annual​ ​Historic​ ​Properties​ ​Tour.​ ​The​ ​tour runs​ ​from​ ​11am​ ​to​ ​4pm​ ​on​ ​Sunday,​ ​September​ ​18. People​ ​can​ ​wander​ ​inside​ ​and​ ​out​ of six​ ​historic​ ​gems​ ​around​ ​our ​Zenith​ ​City in any order. This year five of the properties are Mid-Century Modern. The properties are listed in the link above.

Tickets​ ​are​ ​$25​ ​and can be purchased online now. On the day of the tour, start at one of the addresses in the link above, at the door show your confirmation and you will be given a paper ticket.  Present this ticket for entrance to the rest of the properties.

The day of the event tickets will be available in person in the Fitger’s Duluth lobby, 600 East Superior St., from 10am to 2pm.

Masks will be required to be properly worn while inside the properties.

Docomomo US/MN is pleased to present GOFF, a new documentary from Porch Space and Britni Harris about Bruce Goff, the singular 20th century Midwestern architect. Goff’s distinctive work can be found across the United States—even here, in unassuming Mountain Lake, Minnesota.

Bobak Ha'Eri of Docomomo US/MN will present an illustrated (and entertaining) history of the Modern Movement as the cities surrounding South Lake Minnetonka were developed in the mid-20th century.
