About This House:

Known to locals as the "Bunker House," this property is built into the sloping hillside with commercial-grade materials – steel and concrete, wrapped in warm woods and stone. Multiple decks, patios and exterior stairways extend the living space outdoors, maximizing incredible views of the Mississippi River valley below.

The current owner is landscape architect Nathan Anderson, who is the director of the Landscape Arboretum at Winona State University (and former board member of Docomomo US/MN!). He has taken inspiration from native plants and wildflowers on the 4-acre site with extensive plantings and designed outdoor living areas.

As a huge fan of Midcentury design, Anderson has filled the home with period appropriate furniture on every floor of this 4-level house. He has also worked to 'turn back the clock,' by installing new hardwood floors on the upper levels, and removing carpet to reveal polished concrete on the lower level.

After receiving a fellowship at the Longwood Garden in Philadelphia, Anderson has decided to put this house up for sale – fully furnished. Everything you see on the tour will stay with the house!

Perfect Destination for a Sunday Drive:

Fountain City is located along the Great River Road, in the Driftless area of Wisconsin. It is about two hours from the Twin Cities, or ten minutes from Winona. Pack up the car and enjoy the scenic drive. Light refreshments will be served at the house, but we encourage you to make some other stops on your way to and from the tour: Nearby Points of Interest
