Mid Mod Marvel: The Crooked House – Thursday, July 31, 2025; 5:30-7:30pm.
|
Join Docomomo US/MN to tour The Crooked House, a home built in 1960 by Leslie R. Johnson + Gene Gellert. This house is unique in the sense that there are no 90 degree angles inside the home. A true midcentury-modern gem, the house is in wonderful (mostly original) condition. The new owners purchased The Crooked House in January 2025 and plan to lovingly steward this unique property by thoughtfully updating it over time. Originally built for $33,000, the house sits on a triangular lot that had defied architects attempts to design a home that would fit the site for nearly 20 years. The goal in building a home on such a challenging site was to build something different, yet still keeping with the architecture of the surrounding homes. The exterior is Arizona crab orchard stone with cedar siding. See an original Minneapolis Tribune article about the Crooked House! The house is located in the Morningside neighborhood of Saint Louis Park, at the tapering junction of W. 40th Street + 40th Lane. In-Person (self-guided) Tour: Thursday, July 31, 2025; 5:30-7:30pm Transportation is on your own, or with a friend or two!
