Join Docomomo US/MN and the Minnesota Society of Architectural Historians (MNSAH) for a look inside one of the only Mid-Century Modern houses on Saint Paul's historic Summit Avenue. Members-Only Tour! This tour is FREE for current members of Docomomo US/MN and MNSAH. Registration is required! In-Person (self-guided) Tour: Thursday, February 26, 2026; 4:30pm - 6:30pm Transportation is on your own, or with a friend or two! Street parking is available on Summit Avenue in front of the house. Please note that while the street signage indicates permit parking only, we have arranged an enforcement exception during the hours of the tour. This house is split-level with low-pitch gable roof; the roof is symmetrical in the very front, with a switch midway back to a wounded-dove to encompass the main entrance and stairway. Redbrick chimney with vertical wood siding. Thick roof fascia. Detached garage on back alley. One of the handful of midcentury houses on Summit Avenue. Builder: Herbert R. Boller. Original permit for house stated architect: "None", though possibly a copy of 696 Mississippi River Blvd S by the same builder. Inside you will find the home's architecture well intact, including original windows, wood paneling, and exposed post and beam construction. Some unique features of the design include a home workshop in the lower level, river pebble flooring, and a "Juliet Window" overlooking the airy entry vestibule. This home was originally built for the St. Onge family who formerly lived in a 1920's craftsman, one block North on Portland Avenue. |
