COLUMBUS INDIANA
Richard McCoy
Columbus, Indiana is home to a body of modern architectural achievements far in excess of what would be expected to be found within a city of 42,000 inhabitants. Since 1942, well over 100 works of architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, interiors and public art, produced by internationally known practitioners, have been built in the city. In spite of this remarkable fact, the story of this designed fabric has more often been the basis of tourism articles in the popular press than the topic of substantive consideration within the design professions.
THE IBM OFFICE COMPLEX - BREUER AND THE FLUID USE OF CONCRETE
Angela Pedrão, Docomomo US/Florida
The IBM Corporation’s Complex in Boca Raton by Marcel Breuer and Thomas Gatj was part of a bigger development plan for the region, created to be the seed that would generate expansion, economic growth and urban development. Breuer’s work is not the result of innovation, as an outward search, but in an opposite way, searching for essence. However, the company did not perform as forecasted, and the facility closed its doors without completing its plan.
