Mid Mod Marvel: Mendota Modernism, The Dorset Road House – Thursday, October 23, 2025; 5:30-7:30pm.

Picture

Join Docomomo US/MN to tour the Dorset Road House, a home built in 1956 by Architects Thorshov & Cerny.

The Dorset Road House is a striking example of postwar modern residential design. The architectural plan was first published in Better Homes & Gardens (September 1953) and later included in Reinhold’s Quality Budget Houses (1954). This is the second of only two houses using this plan built in the Twin Cities.

The house is located in Mendota Heights, and remains a vivid expression of how mid-century modernism sought to blend natural materials, efficient planning, and openness to the outdoors. It is a quiet marvel nestled into its wooded setting.

Liturgy & Modernism: Frank Kacmarcik’s influence in Minnesota
Research Lecturer: Mary Dahlman Smith

Date: Thursday, October 16, 2025
Time: 7pm CDT

Frank Kacmarcik (1920-2004) was a Minnesota-based artist, liturgical consultant, designer, calligrapher, iconographer, and collector of fine art and manuscripts. He was a major influence in American religious art and architecture throughout the last half of the 20th Century, and an early practitioner of the Liturgical Movement in the Catholic Church during, and after the Vatican II Council.

Kacmarcik's scholarship took him around the world, though his home was firmly centered in Saint Paul, and Collegeville, Minnesota. His partnerships with architects Marcel Breuer, Ed Sovik, Val Michelson, George Rafferty (and others) left a lasting impact on Places of Worship throughout Minnesota and across the country.

Mary Dahlman Smith presents new research in this livestream event focusing on Frank Kacmarcik's Influence in Minnesota, and the Modernist story of religious art and architecture in 20th century Places of Worship.

Over a period of five decades, William Brumfield was engaged in a serious study of avant-garde architecture in Moscow and other cities. It showcases an exploration of new architectural forms for a new Soviet society, undertaken in the 1920s and 1930s. Mid Mod Marvel: The Crooked House – Thursday, July 31, 2025; 5:30-7:30pm.

Picture

Join Docomomo US/MN to tour The Crooked House, a home built in 1960 by Leslie R. Johnson + Gene Gellert.

This house is unique in the sense that there are no 90 degree angles inside the home. A true midcentury-modern gem, the house is in wonderful (mostly original) condition. The new owners purchased The Crooked House in January 2025 and plan to lovingly steward this unique property by thoughtfully updating it over time.

Originally built for $33,000.00, the house sits on a triangular lot that had defied architects attempts to design a home that would fit the site for nearly 20 years. The goal in building a home on such a challenging site was to build something different, yet still keeping with the architecture of the surrounding homes. The exterior is Arizona crab orchard stone with cedar siding.

Join Docomomo US/MN to tour a Wilbert G. Peterson home that was built as the Charles H. & Shirley Hokanson residence in 1955-1956.

This house is classic MCM, and has been so thoughtfully updated while retaining many original features including the tongue-and-groove wood vaulted ceiling, kitchen cabinetry, and brick fireplaces. The current owners have completely reimagined the home + landscaping, and have been excellent stewards of this gem.

The Rutland Lake Harriet Park addition started being developed in the 1920s, but mass developers of the time likely skipped over areas of potential drainage to the pond that was once in Pershing Field Park. This architect-designed home is in a collection of 5 modern homes that were built on what were deemed as “challenging lots”.

The house is located in the Fulton neighborhood of Southwest Minneapolis, one block from Pershing Field Park and less than a half-mile from Minnehaha Creek.

Preserving the Recent Past 4 – BOSTON – March 18-22, 2025

Picture

In 1995, Preserving the Recent Past – the first national conference to examine the evaluation and preservation of twentieth-century resources – was held in Chicago, Illinois. It was during this event that a US chapter of Docomomo International held its charter meeting. In honor of our 30th anniversary, Docomomo US is partnering with the Historic Preservation Education Foundation (HPEF) to host Preserving the Recent Past 4 (PRP4) in 2025. This event will be in lieu of the National Symposium.

PRP4 offers a national forum to share the latest strategies for identifying, protecting, and conserving significant structures and sites from the recent past.

Docomomo US and its local New England chapter will take part in the paper selection process and will take the lead in organizing the unique tours we are known for. And we wouldn't miss a chance to throw a party!

Plus, don't miss two special Docomomo US events happening alongside the conference. On Tuesday March 18 (the day before PRP begins), we will get a special tour of the Philips Exeter campus, now closed to the public, including Louis Kahn's iconic library. Then on Thursday evening, March 20, join us for a reception and tour of two striking Modernist churches, Paul Rudolph's First Church of Boston, and its neighbor across the street, the First Lutheran Church, designed by Pietro Belluschi.
