Docomomo US/MN is excited to invite all current members to tour the impeccably restored Alcoa Carefree Home in St. Louis Park. This house is a prime example of early prefabricated home concepts that were developed in the postwar era. Join Docomomo US/MN on Someday, TBA In-Person (self-guided) Tour: 5:30-7pm Tickets Required About the Alcoa Carefree Home:Built in 1958 by the Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa), and designed by renowned architect Charles M. Goodman, these experimental model homes were artfully crafted to showcase the versatility of aluminum & a new open-concept layout.
Redwood ceilings & walls are surrounded by colorful textured aluminum accents, with two sides of the home wrapped in (new) sliding glass doors & floor-to-ceiling windows, for a captivating bright & open space. Don't miss this rare opportunity to see one of just 24 Alcoa "Care-free" homes ever constructed (and the only one in Minnesota), and one of few that remain & have been restored. |
About Docomomo US/MN Series of Going, Going, Gone! Tours:
Docomomo US/MN seeks to highlight Mid-Century Modern properties across Minnesota as they become available for sale, or may be threatened by demolition. The Going, Going, Gone! series of home tours are pop-up events that attempt to connect sensitive modernist properties with good stewards for the next generation of preservation and adaptation. If you are the owner of a midcentury home , a real estate agent or neighbor of a notable property – please let us know if there is a site that should be included on a future tour, or added to the MN Modern Registry!
